An Earthly Goal

baileyZoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventure here on the Zoo’s website!

Hello! My name is Bailey and I love playing with and caring for animals. I have three dogs named Chloe, Koda, and Poncho, and a turtle named Tank. I am pretty sure my mom loves them more than my brother and me combined. My pets are part of my family and I always love meeting new animals, but I have always been more interested in the part they play in our ecosystem. I am a proud science and math nerd, which is why I want to go into environmental conservation. The world is so beautiful. I love hiking and exploring new places. One of the favorite trips that I have taken was with my mom to Zion National Park. There we hiked the Narrows and the picture you see with this blog is of me up to my knees in freezing water during our hike. Animals are an important part of the beauty of these places, and that is why I wanted to take an internship at the World Famous San Diego Zoo.

I am very honored to be a part of this great opportunity. Not only to be working with people who have the same interests and passions as me, but also to be able to meet people who can teach me the intricacies of what I want to do with my life. What do I want to do with my life? I want to be a part of saving the world.

Saving the world is a goal, but being a part of protecting it is a duty that we all share.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be a doctor like my mom, then I learned that she was actually a nurse practitioner. If I wanted to be a doctor, I would have to choose among the dozens of divisions of medicine to specialize in and go to school for another seven to ten years. So I started to ask myself different questions. What do I want to do? In what job can I help the most people? What job will be the most fun? Which job will challenge me? After researching these questions and a lot of self-reflection, I decided that I only want to have one patient. This patient is the most diverse, the most challenging, and the most beneficial one we have. This patient is our Earth. The Earth provides literally everything we need and more. It is home to so many organisms and beautiful scenes of nature which are being abused daily. To prevent mass death and destruction it is important for people to be educated about the world we all live in.

My goal in the next seven weeks is to create a blog to convey as much information as possible to educate you, the reader, as well as myself about this wonderful planet we call home. I hope to share my passion while on this extraordinary journey and I look forward to starting my journey in saving the world.
